Treah Caldwell

Psychotherapist and Owner

Who I am as a therapist: My practice is informed by relational counseling theories, poetry, mindfulness, disability justice, harm reduction and a deep desire to dismantle systems of oppression for all.

I received a Masters of Arts in Clinical and Counseling Psychology in 2011 from William Paterson University. In 2015 I completed a certificate program at Metropolitan Counseling Services in psychotherapy with adults. I opened my private practice, Therapy with Treah that same year! Additionally, I have years of experience working with issues related to complex trauma, DID and its impact on the body. I have studied extensively on the topics of the treatment of trauma, power dynamics in the therapy room, harm reduction in psychotherapy and toxic professionalism in mental health care. A bit about me personally: I am white, southern, chronically ill, fat and a bad babe. I am non monogamous, a wife, a girlfriend, a daughter and an animal guardian. I love to dance and swim.

What to expect

Over the past 10 years in the mental health field, I have learned a lot about what I need to ensure my life as a clinician is sustainable for many years to come. It is my hope that, in tending to myself, you will also consider your own needs as a valued part of our work together. My practice is deeply relationionally informed and I live with a chronic disability/pain condition. As such, sessions are conducted by video telehealth and in-person on Mondays in Brookhaven.

I prefer meeting with clients on a weekly to bi-weekly basis. I offer a complimentary 15-30 minute phone or video consultation to explore the possibility of working together. I will periodically take a few days and generally a week off one week a quarter. I will do my best to give you as much notice as possible. Chronic illness can be unpredictable, there is more info about my cancellation policy in my detailed paperwork. I do what I need to make myself comfortable in our sessions and I encourage you to do the same. My private practice rates are non-negotiable unless we have previously agreed on a sliding scale fee agreement, I keep approximately 40% of spots in my caseload on a sliding scale and pro bono basis. I have donated thousands of dollars in sliding scale fees and hundreds of hours of pro bono sessions to folks holding marginalized identities prioritizing queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, people of color (QTBIPOC), disabled, femme, low-income, survivors, and all other oppressed people over the financial comfort of those in privileged positions. (language from the Anti-racist Education Working Group) If any of these practice terms are challenging for you, that is OK! I am not for everyone and my private practice is not for everyone. I would love to help you find the practice and practitioner that is right for you, donโ€™t hesitate to reach out!

My values

I affirm each individual to be the expert in their own lives and reject all power structures that suggest otherwise. That belief is the anchor and most foundational value to my work as a therapist and healer. I see my job then as your therapist to assist you in navigating the deep waters of memory, experience, suffering and meaning making. Wholeness, healing, recovery...there are lots of words we use to talk about being and becoming embodied because it is possible. A different life is possible. I have experienced it in my own journey and I've seen it come true for my clients countless times. I also reject toxic positivism that invites us to just meditate harder or think more positively about the very real structural inequalities happening to us and around us. It is impossible to divorce ourselves from the world we find ourselves in and so engaging in the work of healing while also naming power systems as they come up can be very important.

As a practitioner I exist in the intersection of the Venn diagram of deep warmth and telling you about yourself. When safety and trust are established, healing and connection are possible. Therapy is not an echo chamber but a place to give and receive feedback, to explore feelings, and practice new behaviors and potential outcomes.
